Water Checkers (2011)

Using materials that are already present in the Stockholm winter landscape, Gressel created a temporary checkered rectangle along a public walkway on April 18th, 2011.

During the hour it takes for the design to disappear, Gressel documents the pedestrians as they choose to navigate or ignore their temporarily checkered pavement. Examining how we react to unusual yet unthreatening structures in our daily life, this piece questions our spit-second decisions.
